Baxter County Master Gardeners manage the exhibit listings for the horticulture section of the Baxter County Fair Book. They oversee the horticulture room including the Junior and Senior Horticulture Exhibits at the Baxter county Fair.

Coordinators recruit and train other master Gardeners to register exhibits and to staff the horticulture room at fair time. Informational guides, written and published by members, help educate the public to be better exhibitors. These guides provide detailed information about selecting, preparing and judging the following horticulture for competition at the fair: fruits, herbs, vegetables, plants, flowers and floral arrangements.

An exhibit grooming table is also staffed by BCMGs during the fair registration hours to assist with final entry preparations. This is an annual event, not to be confused with the Fairgrounds Planter outside of the fair building which is maintained year round.

Seminar information for Baxter County Master Gardeners

Each year since 1995, the Baxter County Master Gardeners have presented a community seminar titled "Developing an Ozark Green Thumb.'' This seminar is an educational opportunity for area residents covering various aspects of Ozark gardening. Many topics have been covered; such as composting, vegetables, herbs, perennial and annual plants, roses, raised bed gardens, lawns, trees, shrubs, container gardens, insect and disease control. That is only part of the list.

The seminar is usually held the second Saturday in March. Set-up for the seminar is on Friday, the day before, usually from 9:00 a.m. to noon.

Because this is a sanctioned project, any time you work at the seminar during these two days earns hours toward the twenty (20) work hours required of master gardeners for the year, or toward the forty (40) hours required of new master gardeners.
When you are not working but rather watching and listening to the seminar, you will earn hours toward the twenty (20) learning hours that are required for the year.

Other means of earning work hours in seminar related activities include the following:

1. In the planning phase of the seminar we will have a number of committees that will be looking for workers. Time contributed to any of these committee efforts will constitute work hours. You may expect to be called by one or more committee chairpersons seeking your assistance.

2. Each master gardener who attends the seminar is expected to donate finger food to be used during seminar breaks. Bring these finger foods [such as muffins, bars, cookies, coffeecakes, veggies with dip,
fruit] in serving size pieces. Diabetic foods should be so labeled. Your food donations may be brought in on set-up day or on the morning of the seminar. These donations will be your entrance ticket to the seminar, and the preparation time in making the finger food may be counted as work hours.

It is hoped that all of the Baxter County Master Gardeners will participate in the seminar in some manner, and it is especially desired that master gardeners will use this opportunity to become better acquainted with fellow members.

To ensure enough handouts are available at the seminar, master gardeners who plan to attend and would like to have a seminar packet are required to sign up ahead of time.

The seminar is a success each year due to the efforts of the entire group.

Every Spring KTLO invites the Masters Gardeners to have a booth at their Out Door Show. This is a wonderful opportunity for our community to meet the Master Gardeners, and become familiar with some of our projects. We also answer many of their gardening question, or do our very best to find someone who can solve their problem, and get back to them via a phone call. Our members who work our booth enjoy meeting new people and seeing old friends, and sharing with all, our love of gardening.

Through a partnership between BCMG and the Mountain Home Parks & Recreation, youth from the L.C. Sammons Youth Center meet with Master Gardeners weekly throughout the summer to learn about gardening.

Master Gardeners meet at the school house at Rapps Barren (Cooper Park) at 11:30, for a half hour of preparation and planning. The kids come from 12 to 1:00. . The seeds were put in on May 4th, so the kids will be checking on them, watering, seeing if fertilizing is needed, maybe thinning? The park provides the tools and snacks for the kids. We supervise and answer questions. Just bring yourselves & prepare to have fun. This is a sanctioned project, so if you need work hours, Y’ALL COME.
