1. How can I become a Master Gardener?

The Master Gardener program is offered by the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service. The program is designed to increase the availability of horticultural information and to provide community education opportunities through horticultural projects. A 40 hour class is held each year and is usually comprised of 1 day a week for 5 weeks in the fall. Class registration may be accomplished by calling the Baxter County Extension office at 425-2335.

2. I was a Master Gardener in another state. May I transfer to Baxter County Master Gardeners?

Yes, with the approval of the County Extension Agent, but the 40 hour training class must be satisfactorily completed within the first year of membership.

3. I am moving to Baxter County from another county in Arkansas. May I transfer to Baxter County Master Gardeners? Return to top

Yes, if you are a member in “good standing” in the previous county and with the approval of the Baxter County Extension Agent.

4. What are sanctioned projects? Return to top

Projects which have been approved through the BCMG Sanctioning process and remain in good standing are called “sanctioned projects”. A list of these projects is available elsewhere on this website.

5. I would like the Master Gardeners to maintain a garden at the nursing home. How can I get a project sanctioned? Return to top

You must complete a “MASTER GARDENER PROJECT PROPOSAL” form and submit it to the Projects Committee for review.

6. Does the group have "unsanctioned" projects? Return to top

The group does not administer “unsanctioned” projects. Work performed on non-sanctioned projects may or may not qualify for “other work hours”.

7. As a Master Gardener, if I help plant flowers at my church does that count toward my total volunteer hours? Return to top

The hours should be reported as “other work hours” and apply to that portion other than the 50% required to be earned as sanctioned work hours for recertification.

8. How often should I turn my hours in? Return to top

Hours should be turned in monthly by mail, email or at the following monthly meeting, using the appropriate forms.

9. What will happen if I don't get enough volunteer hours for the year? Return to top

Members, who do not accumulate the required hours by October 1st, may be placed in an exception classification. The member is then required to accrue deficient hours plus the normal required hours during the next 12 month period.

10. If I need to drop out for a year, how can I get back into the group? Return to top

A one year leave of absence is available to members in “good standing”, by filing the appropriate form.

11.Where does the group get money to operate? Return to top

Funds are generated from member dues and fund raising events such as an annual public plant sale.

12. Where is the County Extension Office located? Return to top

The Baxter County Extension office is located at 6th and Church Street.
The phone # is 425-2335

13. Who supplies the flowers and shrubs we plant at the various projects? Return to top

Each sanctioned project chair may request budgeted funds for this purpose.
Some are also donated by Master Gardeners and others.

14. What are SIGs? Return to top

SIG’s are Special Interest Groups that meet several times a year. At this time the SIG’s are, herbs, vegetables, roses, annuals/perennials and composting. Other groups may be added as warranted.
